was going to say Happy New Years...but uh...Happy Valentines? To respond to all those: I thought I hadn't done Magazine - Real Life but I remembered as soon as I saw the cover. I used to be confused how "new wave" referred to both moody stuff that came out of punk and also later synthpop-ish stuff, and this seems to show early versions of both (especially the bonus stuff like Touch and Go) which is cool to hear. I liked New Gold Dream but Sons and Fascination really clicked for me. 70 Cities as Love Brings the Fall is addicting. I hear some cool influences too: Japan/David Sylvian? Scott Walker - Nite Flights?

Romano wins my artist of the year easy (not that there's anyone else pumping out this many albums). Okay Wow, Dandelion, Forever Love's Fool, White Flag, Content to the Point the Way, A Splendour of Heart—all top 10 material. I liked Shabason, Krgovich & Harris - Philadelphia a lot, caaalm album reminding me of 80s sophisti-pop (Blue Nile, etc). I slept to it a lot this year. Oh Sees is great as always. On the indie side I loved Cut Worms - Nobody Lives Here Anymore, surprisingly memorable songwriting for a double album, strongly channeling 70s George Harrison and Dylan (at least to my ear, every YouTube comment compares him to someone different). Malkmus' Traditional Techniques still doing me good too. There was one album I got from a 2020 list you'd like, Psychic Temple - Houses of the Holy. It's basically 4 EPs in different styles smashed into an album, mostly psych rock + folk, it's great stuff.

Satori is *heavy*! Surprised I didn't know these guys. I'm glad you liked Carnation, I specifically uploaded it to make it easier to push on people, hehe. The Japanese music scene is absurdly rich IMO (a product of decades of booming economy, heh). The early 70s had a fruitful folk rock scene (lots of CSNY and The Band influence)—Kazemachi Roman by Happy End is a classic, Light in the Attic put out a great compilation of that era's folk scene too (Even a Tree Can Shed Tears). The city pop genre has blown up online recently, catchy funk/jazz/yacht-rock (a lot of artists even hired famous LA producers and session players for the sound. Happy End got Van Dyke Parks for a song, Akiko Yano, one of my favorite songwriters, got Little Feat as a backing band on her debut album Japanese Girl). Jazz fusion, new wave, and synthpop were huge too. It goes deep.

How you liking the new Steven Wilson? I feel like it's a lot more confident and stylistically consistent than To the Bone, I'm really liking it. Love You to Bits was a good foreshadow of what was to come. My only complaint is the anti-consumerism angle couldn't be worse-timed, I wonder if that factored into the delay at all...

Thanks! I haven't heard any of those specific albums you mentioned, getting them now. Unrelated, I haven't pushed much old Japanese stuff on you, but this might be up your alley. It's a giant XTC love letter, to my ear (especially the title track). It's obscure even in my circles, I had to upload it to YouTube myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38e3fHVhlF8

I really thought Daniel Romano might take a break with the proper label release for his last one, but he just put out another album on Bandcamp, the motherfucker. He's still finding new styles to try out this year... And, yep! I heard Sloan - 12 on your recommendation, I'm looking forward to this new one. I tried that Simple Minds out, yet another band behind a mega hit that I never thought to check out more of. I keep doing that with 80s bands. re: Bob Mould, I like Warehouse a lot, never investigated more. Had no idea he was keeping it going so strong or had this many albums. This goes hard

The Motorpsycho's awesome, I think my favorite from this trilogy? It's rare when an album can be this long and not feel like it. I might go and listen to the whole trilogy in order. That's awesome re: China Crisis, I'm in that phase now. I had noticed a lot of 80s bands I liked getting called "sophisti-pop" (Prefab Sprout, Scritti Politti, Style Council, etc.) and decided to look up the genre and found Flaunt the Imperfection. On first listen I didn't expect it to be a "every song stuck in my head for weeks" album but here I am ("all of my life, it's as sharp, as the biggerthepunch I'm feeelin'~"). Been trying the rest of their discography and their debut is another standout

WELP, so that's why everyone loves Sopranos so much. That last half season, augh. I was actually unspoiled about the ending! I'm one of those sick fucks who's been watching Better Call Saul without seeing any Breaking Bad, but I'm watching it with my brother who did. One of the best dramas going on right now, it's strange seeing it go through the machinations to steer the plot towards a close though :'(

Doing good! I’m so “proud” AZ’s making international news for it, heh. Our governor’s been a real POS (in a long line of other POSs). I’ve actually been in Juneau since before AZ’s numbers started ramping up (my parents are moving up here) so I’ve been hearing the news with dread for when I have to fly back in a week. Before I left I saw lines of people in lines for slides at a water park, god... I was actually planning a Sopranos watch when I got back, speak of the devil. I like how many people has the same idea when lockdown started. I remember liking Get Happy, need to revisit though. I heard Punch the Clock for the first recently, I’m surprised with each new one I hear how consistent he is. (Also, the Rose City Band and 2nd Grade albums are awesome, thanks for the heads-up on both)

Daniel Romano also put on a new LP on his Bandcamp for 4 bucks! It's back to a good classic country rock and Modern Pressure sound. The live album really wowed me too though (accurate title), honestly one of the best live albums I've heard in a long time. For a guy who's known for doing everything himself he's got a fantastic backing band.

With a heavy heart I have to admit the new Phish studio album is actually pretty good! Turns out touring the songs for 2 years before makes for a better album. Speaking of jamming, Garcia Peoples showed up again with Chris Forsyth (as "Peoples Motel Band"), they continue their very hot streak.

Howdy, how are things going for you up there? I've been working from home, which has been whatever...but at least I can get way more music in. Rose City Band has got my attention...starts out like super chill Michael Nau-type stuff then turns into a jam band halfway into the album. I like... I remember buying one of Holy Fuck's early CDs when I was young and hiding it in my closet from my parents because of the name like it was porn or something, heh. They've still got it, I love that big dramatic final track. The No-Man disco ball cover ain't kidding. I'm looking forward to the new Steven Wilson solo LP too, it sounds like that No-Man was a preview for where he's going with it. (The album theme/lyrics seem corny so far, but that's forgivable...)

As for new stuff: that Stephen Malkmus album is a very welcome surprise. On paper I was expecting this to be even weirder than Groove Denied but he makes it work (I think it helps that he never ever changes his singing style). Found a cool jam(?) band (thanks AllMusic), The Third Mind, it's even got a Morning Dew cover and everything. I haven't been familiar with Dave Alvin/The Blasters before but I want to check em out. I forget, have you heard Tedeschi Trucks Band? Blues rock/soul band. I enjoyed their 2019 album but I just heard their 2016 and WOW it's even better. Garcia Peoples put out a live album but weirdly it's not very well recorded (have I been spoiled by Dead tapers?) but one of the band members' dad was a prolific sax session player and he joins them, which is fun to hear. Also, I just found an awesome 1969 psych folk rediscovered cult hit thing, Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Farewell Aldebaran (it's on Zappa's label, which should've clued me in), high recommendation there

I got a few recommendations: Daniel Romano has a punk side project, Ancient Shapes, and just had a new 25-minute album, A Flower That Wouldn't Bloom. It's so good, Romano is unstoppable... I just heard an amazing folk debut album, Refuge Cove by Grace Cummings. Great blend of 60's/70's folk influences, and she's got a deeep and stunning voice, you can't be prepared for it. And (last one), the guitarist from Fucked Up put out a solid power pop double album this year, Young Guv - GUV I & II. (GUV I is more power pop, GUV II has a lot more genre hopping)

I listened to "Toledo" from his Burt Bacharach collab repeatedly when I first heard it, and he just did an original song on a Johnny Cash tribute that was really good ("I'll Still Love You" on Johnny Cash Forever Words). I wouldn't have guessed SLUG was a related project to Field Music but as soon as I read that it made a lot of sense, it sounds almost like a cross of Field Music and the kind of sound MGMT went for on their first few LPs. And an entire solo production too! Impressive. I didn't realize when I mentioned Trettioåriga Kriget earlier that they're still active, I thought they only had a couple for some reason. I only listened to Krigssång, so now I have a bunch of their their albums to listen to, woo. Have you listened to Wobbler's album they put out late last year?
