I see you recently listened to Oranssi Pazuzu. That's a great find. Their latest release, last year's Mestarin Kynsi, was performed in full on youtube, and it's a trippy dark spectacle. You should check it out.

Yes, they were on my to-listen list for some time. I really like how well they mix black metal and psychedelic. I am slowly working my way chronologically through their discography, so when I listen to Mestarin Kynsi I will definitely check out their live performance. Thanks for letting me know! :)

Nao conheco. Pela descricao parece ser bem interessante. A Season of Mist (gravadora) tem umas bandas que gosto. Fazia tempo que a gente nao falava, acho que desde o Natal passado. Tens boa memória mesmo! Feliz Natal atrasado e obrigado pela dica. Vou lembar de retribuir alguma hora. :)

Was going through my friends list, and I remember seeing your info years ago and wondering what that was all about. Now I see you've been very tactful in leaving the kids out of it (we can all agree that would have been going overboard!).

Oh come on, the In Bruges quote that's been there for years, you cunt! I've only become acquainted with McDonagh recently after Three Billboards, but In Bruges and Billboards are easily among my favorite modern movies.

Yeah, it's a sort of casual realism with humor. The closest and easiest comparison would be Kurt Vonnegut, I guess. In terms of directors I think Kurosawa has a lot of that, mixing tragedy and comedy in an offhand way (without the black humor though). Tarantino has some as well behind all the violence, I particularly loved Inglorious Basterds and how human all the characters were amidst all the overblown absurdity - from the touching moment between Shosanna and Fredrick before he shoots her in return, to Hans Landa's naivete at the end. Top-notch dialogue there as well.

And I checked out "Six Shooter" - good stuff! You can see some elements that he used later - the young guy interacting with Brendan Gleeson's charater is a spitting image of the relationship between Ray and Ken in "In Bruges", and the firefight at the end is reminiscent of Billy's fantasies about the final shootout in "Seven Psychopaths". And of course, the imagery of Gleeson sitting at the end holding a rabbit with its head blown off is just perfect.

Yes, I love Vonnegut too. I haven't watched many films by Kurosawa and I think the comedy made by Tarantino is quite different from McDonagh's, even though I like every movie he ever did. For me that young Irish guy makes the movie and you are right, he used the same kind of comedy and the same type of dialogue in In Bruges. || Gosh.. you're so fucking maudlin! || Of course you believe in God! You're an old fella!

Hey, I found via your comments on Present, a band I have only recently checked out (despite being a fan of Univers Zero for many years). Great taste, hope it's ok I add you (found out you are not as high in Magma, the album "Attahk" is a lot better than its reputation, "Merci", not as much)

Haha, é mesmo. Você pode ter uma idéia das cantorias e danças que estão rolando nessa casa, né...? Descobri que Kate me deixa mais enérgica :D

I'm into that. I really can't recommend Ulver highly enough, unparalleled atmosphere throughout their discography (with the possible exception of Kayo Dot). Noxagt and Moondog are two recent(ish) finds I'd suggest highly - bass-heavy instrumental rock for the former and contemporary avant-classical / jazz for the latter. Got an itch for any particular kind of sound/style/thing?

Ulver has been on my radar for a long time, but I still haven't listened to them. Any album will do or do you recommend to start with a particular one? I will definitely check the other two bands you mentioned. Avant music, in any form, is always welcome. I love everything Toby Driver has done. Lately I have been exploring post-punk, stoner rock/metal, garage rock, noise rock, industrial, so if you have any recommendations on these genres, let me know. But I'm pretty open to anything in classical, avant, blues, jazz, metal, rock whatever.

Big question... it really depends on your mood, as Ulver have done a complete change of style on just about every album. To lazily copy/paste something I told someone else: I'd recommend working your way through their (somewhat daunting) discography chronologically; their first, Bergtatt is a fantastic black/atmospheric metal album, Kveldssanger is a great acoustic folk record, their newest is a solid synth-y dark pop album, ATGCLVLSSCAP is ideal to sit down and get stoned to (if you're into that sort of thing), I could go on and on. Shadows of The Sun was (probably) my starting point, and is an absolute classic. Given your prog and avant background, you may really dig Blood Inside and "Themes From William Blake...". Also, with all the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum you've logged, I'm sure you're familiar with their newer and older incarnations, Free Salamander Exhibit and Idiot Flesh? Idiot Flesh can be hard to find but I've managed to dig them up online and they are mind-shattering.

I don't mind Black Metal. I think I will follow your suggestion and listen to Ulver chronologically. And yes, I am definitely in "that sort of thing". :) |||| I'm familiar with Free Salamander Exhibit and I fucking love their album. Idiot Flesh I've only listened once or twice so far. "Fancy" was the album. It didn't quite like it, but then, I think it is time to revisit it. Many thanks for the recommendations! :)
