One final thought: I've never been able to "get" Hell Is Chrome. It reminds me of Sesame Street or something. I've given it plenty of chances but for whatever reason it just won't resonate with me.

I sort of consider it their balls-out powerhouse album, where they demonstrate the depths of their imaginations and ability by throwing everything into it (kitchen sink included). In a way this alienates me as a listener, as, although there are "personal" songs here, it feels like more of a technical marvel than a heartfelt album. As an exercise though, it is undeniably brilliant. I feel like Wilco almost divides their fans into two groups: the ones who appreciate the subtleties of a more introverted Wilco, or the ones who prefer frenetic guitar solo'in' Wilco (of A Ghost Is Born, Being There, Impossible Germany). I lean towards the former, but I can easily understand the latter's appeal.

It's quite bombastic in places, but I agree that it's very well put together (a controlled mess, I suppose). The experimental tracks like At Least That's What You Said, Kidsmoke and Less Than You Think compliment the more traditional folky tracks like Hummingbird, Handshake Drugs and Wishful Thinking. This CD got a lot of rotation time in my car, and therefore birthed some pretty great memories. Favourite would have to be At Least That's What You Said, though it's a pretty obvious choice. I fell for Theologians pretty hard, too.

This is my absolute favorite Wilco album, and probably one of the greatest American rock records ever written. The guitar work on this album is simply brilliant and extremely underrated. The solo on the first track, "At Least That's What You Said" is still the most passionate and intense guitar solo I have ever heard. It's a shame that this album is constantly compared to the much more accessible Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which is also brilliant, because A Ghost is Born is just as much Jeff Tweedy's masterpiece as YHF. If there was one album I could force everyone in the entire world to listen to (with headphones, please!) it would be this motherfucking masterpiece. If you read this entire rant, thank you. Wilco is the absolute best current American rock band.

Absolutely genius. I think it definitely showcases the fact that Jay Bennent (while being a marvelously creative individual) is not necessary for Wilco to be experimental in nature. This is perhaps the closest thing to a Tweedy solo album I think we got out of Wilco and it's also potentially their most "out-there" release. Every track is genius. Also, who tagged it as alt-country? I fail to see any elements of it at all.

"Kidsmoke" is actually my favorite on this album, and is consistently a highlight in concert.

Jack, you'll have a different opinoin of kidsmoke if you ever see Wilco in concert... Kidsmoke is part of the tour rotation and is absolutely *EPIC* live.
