This album is a music golem, its limbs stitched together from different bodies. And through the music, you get glimpses into the minds of all its contributing members, some minds happy, some funky, some mad...and that madness spreads to the host, incorporating every other state of mind into itself.

Undoubtedly the best (most impressive and memorable) Mr. Bungle album, and maybe even Patton's greatest masterpiece. Patton just really lets all loose on this. This beautiful clusterfuck of genre-mashing and vocal prowess is one of my favorite albums of all time, and for good reason.

Such a shame we never (to date, I guess it's still a possibility) got a follow-up to this record, which in my estimation is one of the best of all time. Everything about the album is perfect,

This is a great album that some Bungle fans can't accept because on the surface it isn't as "fucked up"/"weird" as Disco Volante, the self-titled and some of the other songs that are out there from the early recordings, live shows and so forth. That's really unfortunate because despite the more superficially accessible nature of California, it's every bit as complex musically as their earlier work and every bit as genre-defying as well. Doo wop, surf rock, flamenco, metal, hard rock, jazz, et al are combined more seamlessly than ever before to create something wholly unique and enjoyable; songs like "None of Them Knew They were Robots" and "The Air Conditioned Nightmare" just blow me away completely. Disco Volante is an amazing, nearly incomparable record, but I might like California even more.

This is the weakest of the three Bungle albums, but still a masterpiece in its own right.

"Coherence" was not what this band was about.. The production quality of California are impecable and the first 5 songs are brilliant, but Golem II, The holy Filament and Vanity Fair are not strong songs, actually mediocre songs considering its fucking Bungle we're talking about here! I guess California is the most popular one because it doesn't get particuarly noisy. You pussies!

California is my favorite album of all time. "Sweet Charity" and "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" are my two favorites. Not that the album has any flaws!
