"Though I'm not from the US and have never even been to New Orleans, Dr. John's music has been part of my life since childhood. And ol' Mac was one of several that instantly connected with my child brain. His songs tap way down deep into the heart of the rich musical stew from which practically all our modern music landscape descends. They are simultaneously rooted in tradition and experimentation, yet never pretentious or artificial. He used New Orleans R&B and Voodoo paraphernalia with humour and pizzazz, but never exploitatively or trivially; his love for the city and the musical heritage it gave him is wound into every note of the tribal drum rhythms, vivid trundling horn blasts and his own jaded, sad croon. And while his early albums are deservedly the most famous, he continued to experiment, surprise and entertain all the way to his final resting place. And now he's goin' home. RIP." никогда не понимал, почему его более чем культовый статус в сша вообще никак не распространился на остальной мир.

"Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were laughing about the fact that I had sent them an album that was half pornographic and half risqué." - He mingled with The Rolling Stones, recorded with Phil Spector, toured with Marvin Gaye, and now he is writing with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Meet the frankly legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr, better known to the music world as Dr. John: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/dr_john/

I'm in New Orleans for a couple of days. Was at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop where there's a guy who plays piano and sings at night, similar to Dr. John, he did some Dr. John and other stuff. I know some of the music but didn't know of Dr. John particularly. Thanks! I'll be looking up some records!

I admit I've discovered Dr. John quite recently and because it was Dan Auerbach who co-produced Locked Down but...after listening to this 2012 release I've assumed that his previous albums must be at least as good if not even better so I'll give them a listen. I've started with Gris-gris and it's soooooooooooooooooooooo good...

I first became aware of Dr. John back in the mid-70's, when I was a young teen. Our local album rock station would play cuts from Dr. John's Gumbo, and occasionally from his first album, Gris-Gris, late at night. So I'd go to sleep listening to that stuff. What dreams I had....
