Björk on ‘Hunter’:
‘I guess that song's about when you have a lot of people that work for you and you sort-of have to write songs or people get unemployed, you know ? In most cases, it's inspiring but in that particular song I was pissed off with it. I was ready for a break but it didn't seem fair on the people I worked with at the time.’
-Interview with Record Collector #276, 2002

‘hunter was written when i escaped the paparazzi of london and moved to a studio in southern spain i was marching up and down the empty winter beeches and claiming territory i guess…. it is about the energy most musicians that tour recognize after performing for a long time you return to writing… and you have to go hunting for melodies so you can provide for your team i came back to the studio with the melody to this marching song. … played mark bell bolero after ravel and he took out his 909 and wrote the rhythm in one take 909 fanatics still rave about it to me‘
- björk- score stories 12

‘And in a way, “Hunter” is the exception on Homogenic because that was maybe the song reference to Spain because we were sort of joking listening to Ravel’s “Bolero”. And Mark hadn’t heard that song and I played it for him and he was like, "Oh, okay." And just did the beat to “Hunter”. It’s genius. And he also did the beat for “Alarm Call” and “Immature”. So he did the beats that were not like volcanic.‘
