Most excellent death doom. I personnaly can't stand the gothic approach they adopted on later albums.

The fact that they laugh about it now doesn't mean anything, it was recorded over 20 years ago. This is one of the darkest metal albums I've heard (along with Disembowelment's Transcendence Into The Peripheral and Bathory's Under The Sign Of The Black Mark). I like all their albums but you just can't compare this to post-Shades Of God albums. They used everything they had to make the most brutal, miserable music they could on these early records, that's what makes them special. And the lyrics are outstanding, compared to most death metal albums at that time.

"YAWN..even nick and greg said they were kids and didn't know how to make songs or sing...so they made death meatl..hahaha..nick ays his wife laughs her ass off when she sees him on the stage growling in that era XD so does he! " If this is true that means that they really've changed. I will never agree about that. Still this album and Shades of God are their best for me.

I seriously can't see why people would consider this best. I know it must seem more tr00 to say it, but everything this lacks is complete on Gothic (which is a perfect example of the genre). The songwriting is boring, leads are nowhere near what they would become and it all shows how young they were at the time. The stuff they're doing now is leaps and bounds ahead of this.

nick can't do this kind of vocals anymore ..even if he tried..so i agree with you...it has it's magic..but i have to give you a recognition for liking host..i really don't..i tried..not because it's all electro but the songs are not catchy or anything..just a little bleak for me...host is for me the worst..all the others are great.losts of them even unbelievable...(sorry for my spelling, english is not mother tongue)

with icon they started doom /gothic, draconian times oldschol gothic metal ,than electro gothic rock, than just electro, than gothic metal with electro samples with symbol of life -back to their roots..they just explored all the posibilties they could..and you could always say..that's paradise lost there allright..the same members except drummers...good album, but the band has to develop...they grew, so the music grew and they add lots of cool stuff to it..not just doom/death..good album...but icon, draconian, one second, believe in nothing (even greg says it doesn't exist for him because of the way it was produces and made) is great for me, symbol of life finally coming back.... was very happy, than paradise lost x great, in requiem gothic metal but harsh, nowdays modern guitar sound and the last two albums back to shades of god/icon /draconian era...

i agree with you..i don't mean brutal like grind core eraly "scum" napalm death or such...this is a good album..i was just saying that nick is kinda laughing when he sees himself in those days on the stage...he was kinda funny..funny movements...this is their debut and should be respected for that...morbid angel is fine but it's not kind of style of music that i'm into...but i have listened it again couple of times..and you're right...very dark atmosphere, bestial and very aggressive vocals, even good solos..and yes this is death/doom and it's slow and dark...gothic is more doom /death while shades had gone doom totally, but a little cleaner voice..but still good raspy vocal..but shitty production..too bad.....

I kinda agree with what you said about bands who repeat themselves..as a matter of fact I do like all of PL's albums (even Host). it's just that this one is my favorite, It stands out from the rest because of its gloomy atmosphere, the bestial vocals and the infernal music (and lyrics). To be more precise it is a Doom/Death album..(it has nothing to do with "Brutal" DM!! A sound similar to that of Suffocation or Deeds of Flesh would qualify as such). Anyhow "MY" top 5 remains a matter of personal opinion, and this album, believe it or not, falls with albums by DM heavy weights like Obituary or Morbid Angel.

gone pop?..just host man...and now they are back to their roots...i don't know about you but the band who keep repeating thems4elves bacome boring after 2 albums..so they didn't....and one more thing,....you want scary..listen to the moonspell- wolfheart...or cradle of filth..any album till midian..incliding midian....this is far frome the top 5 death metal albums..maybe if you mean brutal...but if you mean death..no way..there are so many..i can't even count...anathema-serenades, amorphis- tales from the thousand lakes..just epic...and many many more ...carcass-heartwork...in flames, dark tranquility,at the gates, the crown, early soilwork..and brutal death..i don''t like..

So fuckin' what...this album contains some of the scariest metal pieces I've ever heard. Definitely in my top 5 greatest Death Metal albums. An obscure and often overlooked gem by an extreme band gone pop.

I love this album. I hope someday that they will return to the style of the first three albums... but maybe they will never release an album like this, or like Gothic or Shades of God.

@Eskarpen: You haven't heard Gothic, have you? Don't let the name put you off, it's a heavy bastard of an album. My favorite, I think...
