Mastodon's Black Album. Funnily enough I hated it at first, but now I really enjoy it for the most part (except Curl and Thickening). I guess they were exhausted after touring and playing CtS so much, that they just wanted to make a fun record. And once you accept that it's very enjoyable.

8/10 my only complaint is that the drums could sound way better... the albums that Brendan did ("Crack the Skye" & most recently "Emperor of Sand" have significantly better drum tones...compare them)

@CousinEarl funny because I bought my first CD (crack the skye) from Mastodon because of that kick-ass cover, later Blood Mountain and The Hunter.

Fuck, what an awesome sound. An Incredible record, with sublime production and engineering. There are not many tricks here, most of the depth and quality of sound comes from the tight interplay and genius song writing. Fuck yeah Mastodon. Awesome. [2]

Don't understand the hate this album gets. It's not all that much different to anything else they've done recently, just a bit more mellow. Nothing wrong with it at all...

Really love this album. It grows on you a lot the more you listen. Lot of haters want the band to release another Crack the Skye, but i'm so happy they didn't do that. The first 3 tracks on this fucking slay and the rest is great too.

Growing on me. Though for me I don't think they can revisit the magic of Crack the Skye

Only Mastodon can follow up an album like Crack the Skye with one that differs greatly from it and still make it absolutely sensational. [2]
