The song marks Ruel’s first solo release since September 2019. In an interview for triple j, Ruel revealed that “as long as you care” was written in 2019, saying that the "Bright Lights, Red Eyes" EP: "Isn’t who I am right now, but it’s the most mature you’ve ever heard me and it was me, in that moment in time."
