On “Sanjuro,” Denzel Curry teams up with fellow Florida native 454 to talk about the experience of growing up and living in the Sunshine State, more formally known as Florida. The name references the 1962 Akira Kurosawa-directed film Sanjuro, continuing the theme throughout the album of Denzel paying his respects to the influential Japanese director. The slap sound effect heard at the beginning of the track might also be a sample from Sanjuro, where the protagonist, Tsubaki Sanjûrô, slaps four of the people he came across during the iconic “master of the slap” scene.
